There are four types of photo experience, and they don’t produce the same thing. The photo booth produces a printed keepsake, the 360 video booth a shareable video, AI a branded image and the merch bar an object. The right choice depends on what you want to remain once the evening is over.
The four types in one table
| Photobooth | 360 video booth | AI photo booth | Merch bar | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What the guest takes home | A printed and digital photo | A video a few seconds long | A transformed image | A personalised object |
| What the brand gets | Images in its brand guidelines, in volume | Videos ready for social media | A brand world brought to life | Objects that keep circulating afterwards |
| Sessions per hour | High, takes groups | Low, one session at a time | Medium, due to processing time | Low to medium |
| Space needed | About 3 m by 2 m | A platform and clearance around it | Similar to the photo booth | A counter and a queue |
| Best suited to | Parties, trade shows, any number of guests | Parties where social sharing matters | Launches and brand activations | Events where the keepsake needs to last |
| Its limit | Now expected; feels ordinary without staging | Creates a queue from 150 guests | The result must be well controlled, or it works against you | Needs a design ready in advance |
Photo booth or photo backdrop: what is the difference?
A photo backdrop (photocall) is a decorated background that people take photos in front of, usually with no set-up and no host. A photo booth is a complete set-up: camera, lighting, instant printing or sharing.
The practical difference is how much it gets used. A backdrop depends on guests’ goodwill and their phones. A photo booth creates a steady flow, because someone hosts it and the result arrives instantly.
How to choose based on your objective
You want your teams to mix: photo booth. It’s the one that puts people side by side and takes groups.
You want content for your social channels: 360 video booth, provided you plan for the queue. Below 150 guests, it’s the most spectacular.
You’re launching a product or a brand: AI photo booth, which places guests inside your world rather than in front of your logo.
You want something to remain six months from now: merch bar. An object made in front of the guest outlasts every freebie handed out at the door.
Can you combine several?
Yes, and beyond 200 guests it’s often the best answer. Two set-ups in two different spots spread the flow and create two distinct moments in the evening.
The most effective combination: a photo booth that absorbs the volume, and a second, slower set-up, 360 or merch bar, that draws a crowd. The reverse, two slow set-ups, produces two queues and a blocked room.
Frequently asked questions
Which photo experience works for 300 people?
A photo booth with a host, possibly two. Single-session set-ups such as the 360 video booth create an unmanageable queue at that volume if they are on their own.
Do we need an internet connection?
For instant sharing and AI transformations, yes. Printing and saving the photos work offline.
Can the photos be used in the company’s communications?
Yes, if the contract provides for it and guests’ consent has been collected. Check this point at the quote stage, not after the event.
